OBJECTIVES

Technical objectives

The aim of this project is to support the development of an anaerobic treatment system, using high performance digesters adapted to the treatment of the medium size wineries’ effluents.
The wastewaters generated in the wineries are usually higher than the limits established in the current legislation. The treatment of theses wastewaters are normally done by aerobic systems. However, these treatments imply high energy cost and excess sludge generation. In this sense, anaerobic digestion is proposed as a feasible alternative offering countless environmental an economical advantages, including minor energy demand for operation, minimal sludge generation and the use of biogas to generate electricity or heat.

Knowledge transfer objectives

The AD-WINE project aims to create synergies between the commercial sector (represented by an innovative SME (AEMA) and the non-commercial ones (CRAB, IFV, LUH and UNEW). Such partnership, understood as an intersectoral added-value, will provide the participating SME with the latest innovations in the field they are working in, and it also gives the opportunity for researchers from the academia to have an insight on the market and on commercial application of their research activities, and to know what the new technological demands are. Therefore, the exchange of knowledge between experts from the academic and scientific world is of great value from technological, scientific and social perspectives.

Furthermore, this project will give to the participant’s staff new opportunities to grow, not only at scientific level, but also at personal level, by developing new and deeper knowledge in a variety of sectors in the framework of high level scientific and technological projects. In this sense, for the researchers involved in this project, the AD-WINE consortium offers diverse career possibilities to increase their research capabilities by knowledge sharing, and additionally a cultural exchange experience.
