Successful completion of the AD-Wine project focused on anaerobic winery wastewater treatment

The European project AD-WINE will finish at the end of November 2015. This project is included in the Marie Curie Actions of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Commission.

Over four years, the Spanish SME Agua, Energía y Medioambiente Servicios Integrales S.L.U. (AEMA) has coordinated and managed an international and multidisciplinary consortium formed by prestigious universities and research centers: University of Newcastle Upon Tyne (UNEW) from United Kingdom, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH) from Germany, Consorzio di Ricerche Applicate alla Biotecnologia (CRAB) from Italy and Insitut Francais De La Vigne et du Vin (IFV) from France.

The project is part of the PEOPLE programme (FP7) and has been developed by more than 20 expert researchers in different disciplines from both the SME and the non-commercial institutions. They have made many secondments in the host institutions by contributing with their knowledge and experience and working side by side with the staff of the host institutions to meet the planned objectives.

Results have been a great success and a new high performance anaerobic digester for the treatment of winery effluent has been developed. The first prototype using the new design has been constructed and tested with winery wastewater. Pilot scale tests have shown excellent results, with capacity to work a high organic loading rates, COD removal efficiency between 90 – 96% and very high quantity and quality of biogas generated (average CH4 content of 80%). Furthermore, a mathematical model has been developed to monitor and predict the quality of effluent and gaseous streams and to carry out process control of the anaerobic treatment.

The consortium is confident about the viability of this new anaerobic technology and they are already working on scaling-up of the prototype and its validation in other sectors.
